How a Human Design chart is calculated

A chart is built from two moments, not one.

The first is your birth. The positions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, the two lunar nodes and the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto at that moment make up your Personality side. It is printed in black.

The second is your Design moment: the time, about three months before you were born, when the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees behind the spot it held at your birth. The 88 degrees are measured along the Sun’s path, not counted in days, so the gap is always close to three months but never exactly the same. The positions at that moment make up your Design side, printed in red.

Each of those 13 positions falls into one of the 64 gates on the Human Design wheel, and every gate is split into six lines. That is why each activation is written as gate.line: 34.2 means gate 34, line 2. Thirteen positions at two moments give you 26 activations.

From there, the chart follows a fixed set of rules:

• A channel is defined when both of its gates are activated, from either side.
• A center is defined when at least one defined channel runs into it.
• Your Type comes from which centers are defined and how they connect. A defined Sacral makes you a Generator, or a Manifesting Generator when a motor center also connects to your Throat. With an open Sacral you are a Manifestor if a motor connects to the Throat, and a Projector if none does. With no defined centers at all, you are a Reflector.
• Your Authority follows a fixed order: a defined Solar Plexus comes first, then the Sacral, the Spleen, the Heart and the G center.
• Your Profile is the line of your Personality Sun, then the line of your Design Sun.
• Your Incarnation Cross uses the gates of the Sun and Earth at both moments.

This calculator finds the positions with astronomy-engine, an open-source astronomy library, and uses the true lunar node. Before we published it, we checked its gates against an established Human Design chart service.

Your city only sets the time zone. Human Design uses where the planets were as seen from Earth, not the angles of your birthplace, so two people born at the same instant anywhere in the world have the same chart.

What each part of your chart means

Type and Strategy

There are five Types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Your Type describes how your energy works with other people, and your Strategy is the simple rule that goes with it. Generators wait for something to respond to. Manifesting Generators respond, then tell the people affected. Projectors wait to be invited into the big things. Manifestors tell people before they act. Reflectors give big decisions about a month.

When we ran 4,000 random birth moments through this calculator, the simulated split was Generator 36.6%, Manifesting Generator 33.0%, Projector 21.0%, Manifestor 8.4% and Reflector 0.9%. Authority

Your Authority is where your reliable decisions come from. It is not your mind. Anyone with a defined Solar Plexus has Emotional authority, and in our simulation that was 52.7% of charts. Sacral authority came next at 33.0%, then Splenic at 7.9%. The rarer ones are Self-Projected (2.4% simulated), Mental, also called Environmental (1.9%), Lunar, which every Reflector has (0.9%), Ego Manifested (0.7%) and Ego Projected (0.5%).

Profile

Your Profile is two numbers from 1 to 6. The first is the line of your Personality Sun, which you know about yourself. The second is the line of your Design Sun, which other people tend to see in you first. The six lines are the Investigator, Hermit, Martyr, Opportunist, Heretic and Role Model.

There are 12 profiles, and they are not evenly spread. In our simulation, 1/3, 2/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/1 and 6/2 each came up between 13.8% and 15.2% of the time, while 1/4, 2/5, 3/6, 4/1, 5/2 and 6/3 each came up between 2.0% and 2.8%. Centers

The nine centers are the Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Sacral, Spleen, Solar Plexus and Root. A defined center is colored in. It works the same way day after day, and it is part of how you affect other people. An open center is white. It is where you take in the people around you, sometimes more strongly than they feel it themselves. Neither is better. Open centers are where you learn the most about other people, and also where you are most likely to act on pressure that isn’t yours.

Channels and gates

There are 36 channels. Each one joins two gates in two different centers, and when both gates are activated the channel is defined and so are both of its centers. Channels are the most consistent traits in a chart: they are always on. A gate on its own, without its partner, is called a hanging gate. It still matters, it is just less fixed than a full channel.

Definition

Definition describes how your defined centers connect to each other. In Single Definition they all join up. In a Split, they form two separate groups, and a Triple or Quadruple Split has three or four. A Reflector has no definition at all. The simulated split was 46.9% Split, 39.8% Single, 11.8% Triple Split, 0.6% Quadruple Split and 0.9% no definition. The bodygraph walkthrough shows how definition looks on a chart.

Incarnation Cross

Your Incarnation Cross comes from four gates: your Personality Sun and Earth and your Design Sun and Earth. Its angle follows from your Profile. The 4/1 profile gives a Juxtaposition Cross. Profiles that start with a 5 or 6 give a Left Angle Cross, and the rest give a Right Angle Cross. In our simulation that was 64.3% Right Angle, 32.9% Left Angle and 2.8% Juxtaposition. Why your birth time matters

The planets don’t all move at the same speed. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so it stays in the same line for about 23 hours and in the same gate for about 5.7 days. The Moon is much faster. It changes gate roughly every 10 hours and line about every 1.7 hours. Everything else sits somewhere in between. Your Design moment moves with your birth moment, so a different birth time shifts both sides of the chart at once.

So some results are safer than others. Your Personality Sun gate holds all day for most people, because the Sun changes gate only about every 5.7 days. Your Profile is less safe than it looks: the Sun changes line about every 23 hours, so on almost every birth date the Profile switches at some hour. Your Type, Authority and channels depend on whether the faster positions, above all the Moon, complete a channel, and that can change within a few hours.

What happens when you don’t know your birth time

Tick “I don’t know my birth time” and the calculator works out 24 charts, one for each hour of your birth date in your birth city’s time zone. It then shows which results stay the same all day and which change, and for each one that changes, how many of the 24 hours give each version. The chart on the page uses noon as a placeholder. Anything that rests on a gate only the Moon activates is flagged, because the Moon is the fastest-moving position in the chart.

If your Type and Authority are the same all day, you can work with them now. If they change, it is worth finding your time: a birth certificate, hospital record, baby book or a parent’s memory. Births before 1970

The time-zone data built into browsers is often wrong by an hour or more for older births in some places, because modern records merge zones that only agree after 1970. For births before 1970, this calculator loads a historical time-zone table (the IANA time-zone database with its historical records) and uses that instead. When the historical records and the browser disagree, or the place isn’t covered, we say so next to your chart, so you can check the local time standard on your birth certificate.
