Human Design Channels: All 36 and How Often Each Appears
A channel is the line between two centers on your bodygraph. It is defined when both of its gates are active in your chart, and then both centers it touches are defined too. There are 36 channels. What a channel is
Look at the bodygraph: nine shapes (the centers) joined by 36 lines. Each line has a gate number at each end, and each gate sits inside a center. Channel 20-34, for example, runs from Gate 20 in the Throat to Gate 34 in the Sacral.
Three rules do most of the work:
- Both gates or nothing. A channel is defined only when both of its gates are active in your chart, from either the black (Personality) or the red (Design) column. One gate on its own does not define anything.

The average was 3.55 channels, about four in five charts (81%) had two to five, and the most in any one chart was 11. The 1% with none are exactly the Reflectors: no channel means no defined center (see the Reflector guide). Roughly one chart in twelve has one channel or none. Neither end is better. Few channels means a lot of open, adaptable space; many means a lot of fixed energy that is harder to flex.
